Wardell Gray naci\u00f3 en Oklahoma City, el menor de cuatro hermanos. Pas\u00f3 los primeros a\u00f1os de su infancia en Oklahoma, antes de trasladarse con su familia a Detroit en 1929. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A principios de 1935, Gray empez\u00f3 a asistir al instituto Northeastern High School, y luego se traslad\u00f3 al instituto Cass Technical High School, que destaca por tener como antiguos alumnos a Donald Byrd, Lucky Thompson y Al McKibbon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
